Regenerative Tourism on Hornby Island

Alone, we can do so little; together, we can do so much. - Anne Keller Regenerative Tourism strives to leave things better than we found them and brings visitors together with the local community. It’s as easy as buying groceries from one of our wonderful roadside stands or supporting a local business. Go a step further and spend time with some of our amazing locals who offer everything from Sound Bathing and Yoga to Fishing Charters and Ocean Tours. We can even help connect you with an art or cooking lesson. Whatever your passion, we hope the ideas on this page enrich your vacation. Sustainability One of the greatest community concerns is the lack of sufficient groundwater, a shared resource especially scarce during summer when supply is lowest and demand the highest. To save water, we ask our visitors to bring their own linens for both bed and bath. While you are here: take short Navy-showers shower every other day or two be mellow with flushing avoid running taps wash laundry when you get home Appreciate Nature with respect: leave rocks and sea creatures on the beach pick up litter where you see it stay on marked trails slow down on our country roads to keep deer, pets, kids and elders safe enjoy your time here quietly Our entire community is grateful for considerate visitors. Take Part… The Hornby Recycling Depot was born from a community vision that now leads the world in recycling, re-purposing and reducing landfill. The Hope Kitchen provides meals to anyone and everyone and builds community; they gratefully accept donations of unopened food, vegetables and fruit as well as financial support. Taylor would approve. Learn Natural History Museum - learn about the vibrant and fascinating flora and fauna on Hornby through a visual and integrative playground of local artistic talent and curiosity. This is a great place to spend a rainy (or even sunny) day! Hornby Island Arts Centre - Our beautiful new Art Gallery showcases Hornby artists from a wide range of disciplines. Their website has a map of Artist Studios across Hornby. Conservancy Hornby Island is a dedicated group of curious and committed islanders caring for the natural health of the land and waters around Hornby through education, advocacy and action. Meet some more good people in our community… Ticara Coertze - if you need a gem of a realtor, my friend Ticara is both Hornby born-and-bred and the salt of the earth. Wind and Waves - my friends Angela and Ray’s company offers the largest group of Hornby vacation rentals. Little Tribune Farm - my friends Nikki and Stu provide stylish glamping tents on a Blueberry farm by the sea. Strachan Valley Farms - Liz and Mike grow good food and great health; find their abundant harvest at the Farmer’s Market, the Coop and their Farm Stand. Sea Breeze Lodge and Restaurant - good food, gorgeous setting, and their friendly staff make this one of my favourite businesses on Hornby. Hornby Creative - featuring a well rounded collection of products from local Hornby artists and artisans. The Farmers Market - everyone, everything, all at once all; the most happening place on Hornby every Wednesday and Saturday during the summer from 10:30-1:30. My friend Djenaiba has sweet pottery, my friend Ted creates stain glass, my friend Indika offers up his paintings, the list goes on and on… Morag - My good friend Morag is a talented tattoo artist and a great human. We respectfully acknowledge Hornby Island is a part of the unceeded traditional territory of the K'ómoks First Nation and the Pentlatch People, caretakers of the 'land of plenty' since time immemorial. These lands and waters are sacred. May we take care of them in the way they take care of us and honour the interdependence between people, the animal kingdom and the Earth.
